2013 Corvette ZR1 to lead the 96th Indy 500

Posted on May 9th, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS – A 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
will lead the starting field of the 96th Indianapolis 500 to the green flag
Sunday, May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With 638 horsepower, the
Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful production car
ever to pace the race.

This will be the 23rd time a
Chevrolet has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the 11th
time a Corvette is serving as the Pace Car. Both are event records. The 2013
model year will mark the 60th anniversary and the final year of production for
the current generation Corvette.

“Corvette embodies pure
performance, so the ZR1 is a perfect car to pace the most prestigious auto race
in the world,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation
president and chief executive officer. “Chevrolet is a great partner of
the Speedway, and we share in the excitement of the upcoming 60th anniversary
of the iconic Corvette brand. It’s even more meaningful to see a Chevrolet
pacing the field at Indy since Chevy has returned as an engine supplier for the
IZOD IndyCar Series for the first time since 2005.”
“This is a truly momentous year for Chevrolet when it comes
to performance, with our continued success on and off track, and especially
with our return to the IndyCar Series, powering some of the fastest cars on the
circuit,” said Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and
Motorsports. “I can’t think of a better way to mark the 60th
Anniversary of Corvette than having it lead the starting field of the
Indianapolis 500.”

A supercharged, 6.2-liter LS9
engine generating 638 horsepower helps to create the ZR1′s performance. Of all
mass-production companies, Chevrolet is the leader in using carbon fiber. The
lightweight material is used for structural components, including the front fenders,
hood, roof, front splitter, rocker panels and floor pans. With a curb weight of
3,353 pounds, the ZR1 features a power-to-weight ratio of just 5.2 pounds per
horsepower. The ZR1 also features advanced technology such as Magnetic
Selective Ride Control, Launch Control system with Performance Track
Management, a four-channel ABS system and Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brake
rotors.

As a result, the ZR1 is the
fastest Chevrolet ever produced, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in
3.4 seconds, and capable of reaching a top speed of 205 mph. The ZR1 lapped the
famed Nurburgring’ Nordschleife (“north loop”) in 7:19.63.

The first Chevrolet selected as
the Indianapolis 500 pace car was the 1948 Fleetmaster Six. The brand would go
on to lead the racing pack more than any other manufacturer. In addition to the
Fleetmaster Six, the list of Chevy pace cars includes:

Chevrolet Posts Best Q1 Results In Company History

Posted on April 18th, 2011

Chevrolet is off to its hottest start in the company’s 100 year history. Thanks to a 15 percent jump in global demand, Chevrolet has set a new mark for first quarter sales.

Chevrolet saw strong growth in several key markets during the first quarter, resulting in a worldwide sales total of 1.1 million vehicles.

“This is a great way to kick off Chevrolet’s Centennial year,” said Joel Ewanick, GM global chief marketing officer. “Our first-quarter results are a clear indication that consumers are responding to our new product line, which only happens when you truly listen to the customer.”

The United States led Chevrolet’s sales push with a 23 percent increase to 416,505 units. China was next in line in terms of growth, expanding 17 percent to 159,303 vehicles. Chevrolet also posted strong growth in Brazil, Mexico and Europe.

The Chevrolet Cruze was the brand’s global leader during the period, with its sales increasing 117 percent to 150,652 units. Since launching in 2009, Chevrolet has sold 600,000 Cruze models worldwide.

2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette Celebrates Racing Heritage

Posted on April 15th, 2011

Z06 Centennial Edition to be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach sale

DETROIT – Chevrolet, founded by a racing pioneer 100 years ago, celebrates its performance heritage with the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette, which features a sleek black color scheme, unique design elements and Corvette’s trademark sports car technology. The 2012 Centennial Edition package will be available on all Corvette models – including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 – starting this summer.

The special package was inspired by Chevrolet’s racing-bred foundation, which continues with Corvette’s international racing excellence and production sports car prominence. “Racing and performance are the roots of Chevrolet, a tradition carried forward today by Corvette,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The Centennial Edition not only celebrates our 100 years, it once again pushes Corvette forward for a new generation of sports car fans.” Chevrolet will auction a Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction, in West Palm Beach, Fla., on April 9, with the proceeds to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. It will be the 100th 2012 Corvette off the assembly line, with a vehicle identification number ending in “00100.”

The Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette expresses racing heritage, but does so with a sleek, modern, even sinister-looking appearance. The Centennial Edition package comes exclusively in Carbon Flash Metallic, with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake calipers. The wheels are constructed of lightweight cast-spun aluminum and include a thin red outline around the perimeter of its surface on the Z06. The wheels are specific to the respective Corvette models, including 18-inch/19-inch for Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport; and 19-inch/20-inch for Z06 and ZR1. Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension and a technology advance initiated by Corvette, is included on all Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette models. The Centennial Edition also features special badges that signify Chevrolet’s racing history. A graphic logo featuring an iconic image of Louis Chevrolet appears on the B-pillars, the center caps of the wheels, and the center of the steering wheel. The seat headrests also carry an embossed centennial logo.

Aficionados will note one other small detail: The historic crossed flags badge contains a small adaptation, with “100” in place of the traditional fleur-de-lis symbol, only for the Centennial Edition. The exterior color scheme is reinforced inside the car, with the Ebony leather-wrapped instrument panel and doors complimented by red stitching also on the steering wheel, seats, console and shifter. The seats feature microfiber suede accents on seats, steering wheel, shifter and armrests, which were first used on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Limited Edition. The Chevrolet Centennial Edition will be available on all Corvette models via order code ZLC. Pricing will be released this summer prior to the start of availability. “Louis Chevrolet was a fearless racing pioneer who also designed our first car,” Scheidt said. “Corvette is a natural fit to honor that legacy, while creating a compelling new package for sports car drivers.”

Barrett-Jackson auction details

Chevrolet chose to debut the Centennial Edition Corvette at Barrett-Jackson to enable the auction proceeds to go to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. The foundation supporting children and families dealing with cancer is a key partner with the American Le Mans Series, in which Corvette Racing is an integral participant. The 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette Z06 (VIN 100) to be auctioned is based on the production 3LZ model with the Z07 performance package, new Z06 carbon fiber hood and CFZ carbon fiber package, which includes:

  • Bose premium sound system, with one-year XM subscription, navigation and USB
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity
  • Power-adjustable and heated seats
  • Memory package, home remote, Head Up Display and power-telescoping steering wheel
  • The Custom Leather Wrapped Interior Package, with leather-wrapped upper instrument panels, upper door trim panels and console storage cover and red contrasting stitching
  • Z07 performance package, including Brembo ceramic brakes, Magnetic Ride Control and 19-inch/20-inch wheels and Michelin tires
  • CFZ package includes carbon fiber rockers, front splitter and roof. New Carbon Fiber raised hood option for Z06, which was introduced on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Edition.

The winning bidder will also receive the Corvette Engine Build Experience program – which allows Z06 or ZR1 buyers to build their own engine alongside expert technicians – as well as the opportunity to take delivery of the car at the National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.

Chevrolet Announces the 45th Anniversary Camaro – along with interior and performance improvements!

Posted on April 15th, 2011

DETROIT – Chevrolet Camaro, America’s most popular sports car, extends its momentum with enhancements for the 2012 model year. Highlights include an improved version of its standard 3.6L direct injection V-6 engine, a new FE4 performance suspension package for SS coupes, and several interior and technology improvements, such as a revised instrument panel design, new steering wheel and rear camera system.

The enhancements arrive in time for Camaro’s 45th birthday, which will be celebrated with this summer’s release of the 45th Anniversary Special Edition Camaro. Continuing the tradition of Camaro anniversary models, the 45th Anniversary Special Edition carries all the upgrades for 2012, with additional unique design elements, inside and out.

“The appeal of Camaro design and performance has powered it to the top of its segment,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “For 2012, we’re capitalizing on that momentum with enhancements to Camaro’s performance and comfort.”

Also coming in early 2012 is the high-performance Camaro ZL1, the most technologically advanced car ever developed in its segment.

Class-leading 3.6L V-6 engine

Camaro’s new 3.6L direct injection V-6 – the LFX engine – goes into production this summer. It delivers an SAE-certified 323 horsepower (241 kW) at 6,800 rpm – an increase of 11 horsepower (8 kW) over the 2011 engine, with no compromise in fuel economy.

The LFX delivers the most standard power in the regular sports car segment. It is also 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor, which promotes a more balanced driving experience. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for the ’12 Camaro is 30 mpg (2LS model).

Compared to the 3.6L V-6 in 2011 models, the new LFX engine features:

  • New cylinder head design with integrated exhaust manifold
  • Improved intake port design and larger intake valves within the cylinder heads
  • Longer-duration intake camshafts
  • Composite intake manifold
  • New fuel pump and isolated fuel rail
  • New, optimized-flow fuel injectors
  • Structural front cover and cylinder block enhancements
  • Stronger and lighter-weight connecting rods
  • Camshaft cap and throttle body design enhancements.

Direct injection is the key technology enabling the engine’s combination of power and efficiency. It optimizes fuel delivery to the combustion chamber by introducing fuel closer to the combustion chamber. The result is better efficiency in the combustion process leading to increased fuel efficiency at part and full throttle. It also uses a new fuel pump for the direct injection system, along with a new, isolated fuel rail. The new fuel pump is quieter, while the isolated fuel rail further reduces fuel system noise.

FE4 suspension enhances performance

The new FE4 suspension debuts as a performance improvement for the Camaro SS coupe in 2012, focusing on more refined handling.

“Our objective was to create a more precise sport suspension for the SS coupe, with greater road-holding capability,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. ”We applied lessons learned from extensive track testing to better refine the suspension geometry for flatter cornering, a more neutral balance during hard turns, and minimized understeer at the limit.”

Elements of the FE4 package include:

  • Retuned front and rear dampers
  • New solid front (23 mm) and rear (24 mm) stabilizer bars
  • Twenty-inch aluminum wheels and P245/45R20 front/P275/40R20 rear tires (SS).

More than just new components, the new FE4 performance suspension incorporates learning from the ongoing development of the high-performance Camaro ZL1. In particular, the suspension geometry has been adjusted, including reshaped stabilizer bars that are repositioned outboard of the shock mounts. This results in more effective body control and more precise response in performance driving.

Interior, exterior and technology updates

The 2012 model year brings appearance, ergonomic and technology upgrades inside for Camaro drivers and passengers. The interior updates include a revised instrument panel appearance, with new instrument graphics and trim, as well as a new steering wheel design and a power lift feature for the front passenger seat. The steering wheel features a fresh new look and ergonomic improvements intended to support performance driving.

Also new for Camaro in 2012 is a Rear Vision Package, which adds a rearview camera system and an auto-dimming mirror to the existing Rear Park Assist feature. The rearview camera system complements the rear parking assist by providing a video display of the area behind the car, with the video image appearing in the car’s inside rearview mirror.

On the exterior for 2012, a new rear spoiler will be added as a standard feature for Camaro; and the taillamps that had been a part of the RS appearance package option are also being made standard. Additionally, a new, body-color “sharkfin” antenna joins the RS package.

Crystal Red Tintcoat replaces Red Jewel as an exterior color.

45th Anniversary package details

Launching this summer, the 45th Anniversary Special Edition commemorates both Camaro’s lineage and its 21st-century revival. Camaro fans will get their first look at the 45th Anniversary Special Edition at the Camaro5 Fest II, April 15 in Arizona. The anniversary package will be offered on Camaro’s top two trim levels (2LT and 2SS) for both coupe and convertible body styles.

The exterior signature of the 45th Anniversary Special Edition is its unique rally stripe, in red and silver, that contrasts the Carbon Flash Metallic paint. The package also includes:

  • Unique 45th Anniversary hood and deck stripes; badges located beneath the front fender emblems
  • New-design 20 inch wheels in dark silver
  • Fog lamp and taillamp bezels finished in dark silver
  • RS-style taillamp lenses
  • Standard rear spoiler and HID headlamps
  • Body-color roof molding
  • Jet Black interior with leather-trimmed seats featuring the 45th Anniversary logo
  • White instrument panel and door trim inserts with the 45th Anniversary logo on the instrument panel
